Description
  • Irmologion (Heirmologion) – a liturgical book that contains the text of words and music or of words alone of the irmoi (irmos), or theme songs of the Canons, as well as the service sung in honor of our Lord, the Theotokos, and other major saints. This collection probably owes its origin to a time when, since the Canons were not sung in their entirety, most of the troparia eothina were simply read, and the irmos, or model, of each ode was sung. Because the cantors knew the tune of the irmosvery well, they did not need to have access to the great volumes that contained the Canon in its entirety. (Day, Peter. The Liturgical Dictionary of Eastern Christianity.Wellwood, 1993. P. 129-130). The book forms part of the the collection of old prints and special collections of UCU Library. Belonged at the end of XIX century to the Church of the Saint Nicholas (localition unknown, near the city of Ivano-Frankivsk). The binding is original (wooden base, leather, with damage and paint spots). The book contains numerous marginal notes in black ink, in grey, blue and violet pencils. Zapasko I͡A., Isai͡evych I͡A.
