Irmologion (Heirmologion) – a liturgical book that contains the text of words and music or of words alone of the irmoi (irmos), or theme songs of the Canons, as well as the service sung in honor of our Lord, the Theotokos, and other major saints. This collection probably owes its origin to a time when, since the Canons were not sung in their entirety, most of the troparia eothina were simply read, and the irmos, or model, of each ode was sung. Because the cantors knew the tune of the irmosvery well, they did not need to have access to the great volumes that contained the Canon in its entirety. (Day, Peter.
