Commentary and edition of the Milanese-Cistercian recension and the Bernardine recension of the twelfth-century Cistercian Hymnal tracing the evolution of Cistercian texts and melodies from the Molesme-Cistercian Hymnal through the early twelfth century, when the Cistercian hymnal attained its medieval form. The hymnal was used until the mid-seventeenth century, when liturgical practices were changed to conform to Roman practice. Waddell divides the manuscripts into two major recensions, each represented in several manuscripts.
