• Footage from the 1997 documentary “A Life Apart: Hasidism in America” (directed by Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky), the first in-depth documentary about Hasidic Jews, members of a distinctive group within Judaism that has roots in pre-World War II Eastern Europe. Preparations for the dedication of a new building for the Ger Yeshiva in Borough Park, Brooklyn. Hatzolah ambulance responds to a medical emergency. (Part 1) November, 1993. 00:00:13 - Hasidic men erecting a platform outdoors for the dedication of the new Ger yeshiva. (No audio) 00:00:24 - Preparations for visit of the Gerer Rebbe inside the sanctuary in the new Ger yeshiva. 00:05:31 - Men speak on walkie-talkies and go out onto the platform. One man directs the unloading of materials for building bleachers from the platform. Shots of the street as trucks get into position to unload bleachers. Police arrive for crowd control and security. Bleachers being unloaded and set up. 00:12:49 - Event coordinator shoos people out of the sanctuary urging them to help put up chairs on the dais. 00:13:49 - Folding chairs being hastily put in place on the street. More folding chairs being unloaded from a truck. Police conferring about crown control. View of the new yeshiva building. 00:16:33 - Girls and women walking by as the preparations for the ceremony continue. Police near the dais. An elderly man resting on a bleacher. The filmmaker interviews him (in English). He says his rebbe, the Gerer Rebbe, is coming from Israel. He himself is from Bnei Brak in Israel. 00:17:16 - Continuing preparations for the ceremony. 00:18:23 - Hatzolah EMS technician arrives and runs into the yeshiva. A stretcher is taken out of an ambulance and other activity by EMS technicians ensue. 00:22:02 - Audio Only - Wild Sound. Check of mike by event coordinators: "I'm telling you -- the sound is unbelievable!"
