John Markey, OP, presents the lecture "Notes from the Road More Travelled: Doing Theology in a US Cultural Context." Fr. Markey proposes that, in the current century, U.S. theologians are faced with a mission to inculturate the Gospel and Christian Tradition in terms relatable to the cultural ethos of the United States, e.g. its unique patterns of thought, social structures, cultural narratives, and rituals. While Hispanics/Latin@s, African Americans, Asian Americans, feminists, etc. have continually served with an awareness of the need for contextualization, Euro-American academic and ecclesial theology has largely failed to analyze, articulate, and critique its own U.S. cultural context and to engage it in a serious evangelical and theological dialogue. Fr. Markey offers insights on how this process of contextualization might proceed. Recorded at CTU on October 12, 2015, for the annual Louis J. Luzbetak, SVD Lecture on Mission and Culture. John Markey, OP, holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Divinity degree from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, Berkeley, CA, and a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA.
